Kjell Block Sandved devoted his photographic career to capturing the beauty of the natural world and along the way, he gathered a vast collection of closely observed images of plants, butterflies and other life forms, which he published in a series of books.

While going through a collection of specimens at the Smithsonian’s Museum of Natural History in 1960, Sandved noticed a butterfly wing pattern that looked like the letter “F” of the English alphabet.

That find sent him on a decades-long quest in search of wing patterns that look like the 26 letters of the alphabet, as well as all ten single-digit numbers from 0 through 9. He published his results in the Butterfly Alphabet poster below.
