Croatian artist and photographer Lana Mesic had just completed an art installation project that required the use of 15,000 coins. Mesic, who was staying in London with AirBnB host Jamahl McMurran, didn’t want to lug all the coins back home to Croatia. As McMurran and Mesic pondered over what to do with the massive collection of coins, they eventually decided to host a social experiment.

McMurran writes, “So my Airbnb guest and I decided to place 15000 2p coins on the canal and record what would happen…. #coinsbythecanal.”

They were curious what people would do when they saw the coins sitting unclaimed by the canal. No amount of guessing could have predicted the events that ensued.
