Johny Surf is a Portugal-based artist that combines his passion for surfing with his exceptional sculpting skills.
On his website he writes (translated from Portuguese):
"It is by the sea that I feel at home, that is where I carry my energy, which I feel alive, useful for myself.
"From this 2013 I continue in the creative pursuit of the perfect wave. From the harmony of simple lines, minimalist and crystalline colors, resulting from the encounter of these three elements, water, earth, wind."
Each crystalline, cresting wave is framed by driftwood he's found on the beach, conveying his crafty approach while emphasizing the works' crystal clear connection to nature.
Johnny sculpts each wave meticulously, using gypsum, which is the primary ingredient in plaster. He affixes each one of a piece of driftwood and then utilizes its unique textures, colors and contours to emphasize the natural feel of his work.
Once the design has been created, the piece is painted in beautiful jewel tones that he mixes himself.
“Even after repeating the same process of mixing colors dozens of times, they always turn out different, just like the shape, just like the emotion behind each piece,” he writes on Instagram. “There is always the intrigue about an outcome: ‘What will be born this time from under my hands while I follow the exact same steps?!'”
“When I hold a wave,” he explains, “it reminds me that we can only be happy by doing what we love and that's the only way.”
