Canadian makeup artist Mimi Choy has been called the "queen of optical illusion makeup," and these images surely prove that to be true.
In her latest work, Mimi painted a 3D snake onto her lips. Quoting filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro, who’s behind spooky classics like Pan’s Labyrinth, Choi shared a photo of the phenomenal snake lip art:
Mimi used only brow liners and a brow pencil to create this unbelievably lifelike makeup illusion. It was all freehand, no template was used - the refined lip art's 3D effect is enhanced by the shadowing she deftly places in all the right spots, making it seem like the serpent is slithering through her lips.
She's done a lot of other mind-binding work too.
Hey guys, is it just me or is my 👃🏼a little bit crooked? 🤔😩 • This is #makeup • Another variation of my #shift makeup illusion using @nyxcosmetics matte black liquid eyeliner and Vivid Brights. Inspired by the brilliant illustrations of @miles_art. Video coming next to clear some of your confusions! 😜
The Vancouver-based makeup artist has only been in the industry for three years. She left behind her career as a teacher to take up the craft. But in this short amount of time, Mimi and her work has become a viral sensation.
“When I do illusions now, I draw my inspiration mostly from my surroundings, photography, paintings, and emotions,” she explained.
“My main goal each time I do a new look is to beat myself from yesterday because I'm the biggest critic and competition to myself. It's gotten really hard to impress myself these days but it motivates me to keep trying and doing better.”
A compilation of my previous #makeup illusions by Viral Thread on Facebook ⚡️❤️ • The one shown at 11 seconds was a collaboration with motion artist @theglitch.og who made my makeup move using digital effects. Some people have a hard time believing that my makeup isn't CG - truth is, I painted every single one of them by hand and I don't need to prove that to anybody by doing tutorials. My goal never was to impress anybody but myself. I do these illusions to challenge myself and better my skills, and most importantly, because they make me happy. It's always been this way and will always be. 🙃 Thanks to my 220K followers for following this strange art journey of mine! 😘 #gratitude #viralthread #mimles #mimichoimakeup
