Getting a flat tire while on a bike trip is never fun. Yes, you can easily pump and patch your tire to get back on the road, but if you don’t have the proper tools with you, you’re looking at a very long walk home. A company in Utah is looking to make the dreaded flat tire a thing of the past by introducing two tubeless and airless tire options—Ever Tires and Nexo Tires.
The Nexo set is designed to be mounted on existing wheels and has a lifespan of up to 3,100 miles. The Ever set is a more permanent solution that replaces the entire wheel set and has an estimated lifespan of 5,000 miles—that’s enough to cycle across the U.S. and back again.
The idea of a flat-free tire is nothing new, but the technology has never been widely adopted because tubeless tires are too stiff and have poor shock absorption compared to conventional tires. The creators of Nexo and Ever tires claim that their products don’t have these problems.
Their tires are made from a unique polymer blend that offers cushion and resilience with durability. The manufacturing process is eco-friendly and involves a one-step injection molding process that takes 30 minutes. The tires are also easy to recycle because they’re made of only one material.
If widely adopted, these tubeless tires could replace the 10,000,000 conventional bike tires and tubes are thrown away every year. The company has launched a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund the production of the two tire sets. It plans to deliver its first shipment within the U.S. in January 2017. The Nexo set costs $75 and the Ever set is priced between $76 and $105 depending on the size.
