Have you ever dreamed of reducing your negative impacts on the environment while still living in comfort? You don’t have to move into a bus or tree house to live a more sustainable existence. Earthships, created by architect Mike Reynolds, are the most eco-friendly houses in the world. And despite their sustainability they are incredibly luxurious.

Earthships are built using things like recycled plastic, bottles, tires and other cheap or free materials. Speaking of cheap, Earthships are completely bill-free!

In the last year, over 3,000 people purchased pre-made Earthships and demand is only expected to go up. Instead of buying an Earthship, you can actually build one DIY style. Eric Ficinus has your back; he’s created a step-by-step guide detailing how to make an Earthship.

Ficinus is well qualified for the task. He spent the last four years studying at the Earthship Academy where he learned all about Earthship design. Throughout the process he lived in multiple Earthships and built them in New Mexico, New York and Vermont.

Post-graduation, Ficinus combined all of his knowledge and experience into an easy to understand book detailing everything you need to know about living in an Earthship, the benefits to doing so and even how to build one. The Earthship Model Kit is a 32-page book filled with color illustrations and step-by-step graphics, as well as the 6 design principles of Earthships.

Before building any structure, it’s important to have a detailed plan of action and model to reference. That’s why the book comes with a miniature build-able house containing 11 paper pre-cut pieces that can be assembled into a 3D model. Once completed, the model shows you exactly what your 900-square-foot Earthship will look like, including a detailed floor plan.

This is what your paper 3D model will look like:

Looking down inside of the 3D model, you can see the floor plan of the 900-sqaure-foot space.

The overarching goal of Ficinus’ book is to educate the public about the importance of living a greener and more sustainable life. Ficinus loves the idea of everyone having access to the fundamentals behind Earthships, as well as the ability to build one.

Need more space? You can combine multiple Earthships into one compound.

Many people choose to add organic greenhouses to their Earthships, like the one pictured below:
